• Serial ATA transmits data in a Serial manner and can increase the bandwidth of data transmission by using higher operating frequencies with less bit width. Serial ATA transmits only one bit of data ATA time, which reduces the number of SATA pins and cable connections, making it more efficient. In fact, Serial ATA uses just four pins to do all the work -- connecting cables, connecting ground cables, sending data, and receiving data -- while reducing system power consumption and complexity.
• Second, Serial ATA starts from a higher starting point and has greater growth potential. Serial ATA 1.0 defines data transfer rates of up to 150MB/ SEC, which is higher than the highest data transfer rates of 133MB/ SEC achieved by the fastest parallel ATA today, namely ATA/133. The data transfer rate in the already released Serial ATA 2.0 will reach 300MB/ SEC, and the ultimate Serial ATA 3.0 will achieve a maximum data transfer rate of 600MB/ SEC.
